THE WOODWORKER SHOW 2008

The organisers of the 2008 Woodworker show offered the Marquetry Society a display and demonstration stand for this very popular annual event at the Alexandra Palace during the weekend of  8th, 9th and 10th of February, which was, of course, duly accepted.

The Society then asked its Harrow Group if they would be able to furnish the exhibition stand with examples of their work, but for various reasons they were unable to fully equip the stand with such examples of their marquetry works for the whole of the three day event, so the Chelmsford, St. Albans and Thurrock Groups got together and provided 35 further pictures, which, I’m pleased to say, were displayed very well; and, those groups also helped out by providing stewards on Friday 8th.

As usual there was a lot of interest shown at the stand, with the demonstrations particularly attracting many questions and enquiries, but unfortunately recruitment to the society’s fold on that first day was a little slower than was initially anticipated.

On Saturday the 9th however, THE REDBRIDGE GROUP were requested to man the stand; and Harry Hayford, Bill Kober, Peter Jones, John Booth and Roy Murton of the Redbridge Group team duly obliged.

We had demonstrations of marquetry picture making given by Harry, Bill, Peter and Roy. Roy also did a demonstration of the basket weave technique, which seemed to become an increasingly popular attraction with our stand’s visitors as the day progressed.

During that Saturday’s stint we had a veritable multitude of extremely interested viewers and visitors to the stand; and we all, to a man, virtually made ourselves hoarse by answering many, many marquetry themed questions and enquiries.

Our stand is always popular with the show's visitors

We gave out a huge number of pamphlets for the Society, plus similar tracts also for the various groups , and guess what? We actually ended up by recruiting several new fully paid up Society members by the end of the day!!

THAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT !
