The Guildford Marquetry group 1953
(This is the Group that oversaw the first National Exhibition)

Picture: The Guildford Marquetry Group of 1953 who oversaw the very first National Exhibition

A section of the original Guildford Marquetry Group hard at work.
They are:-
Standing (left to right); Mr F. V. Pester, Dr R. M. Graham-Pole (Group Chairman), Mr D. K. Walters (Hon.
Gen. Treasurer of the Society and Group Secretary), Mr R. F. Boxall
Sitting (left to right); Miss W. Simmonds, Mr J. Airston, Miss S. M. Drake, Miss C. Dickie, Miss F. M. Merson,
Mr C. Collier, Mr W. F. Marshall, Miss B. Brace.

It was interesting to see that there were so many young ladies taking to the art of marquetry in 1953. It would be nice to be able to attract so many young people back into the art of marquetry once more. I must say that they certainly seemed to be working extremely productively in the above picture, judging by the amount of pictures they have on their table!

Those Marquetarians you see in the above picture were some of the actual people who oversaw the very first Marquetry Society's National Exhibition in 1953. The fellow that you can see who is standing third in from the left is no other than Douglas Walters who wrote the article describing that first National Exhibition that you can read in these pages. He also wrote the article describing the uses of various glues for issue No1 of the Marquetarian (which you can also read in these pages)
