The Tools of the Trade

On this page are displayed the gamut of the tools used by the marquetarian.

You do not need to amass the full kit as shown here to participate in marquetry, but if you do consider acquiring these tools you will be prepared for all marquetry eventualities, especially the "finishing" side of the art.

CARPENTER'S SET SQUARE

A must for every marquetarian to determine the accuracy of the base board, picture, etc.

CIRCLE CUTTER

Very useful for cutting small circles, larger designs are available.

MAGNIFYING HEAD BAND

A magnifying glass that you wear in the same manner as goggles. It is ideal for small work.

MORTICE GAUGE

It has two points, the width being adjusted by the screw at the end of the handle. Can be used for marking out on veneers for insertion of banding and stringers. Use in conjunction with the "scratch" for the inlay of banding into table tops, etc.

SCRATCH (see also Mortice Gauge)

A simple tool using a broken hacksaw blade as a cutter. This cutter is ground to the width of the banding being used. The stock is drawn against the edge of the wood in a scratching motion, the depth of the cut should be slightly less than the thickness of the banding.

CLOSE UP VIEW OF SCRATCH CUTTER

This picture shows the detail of the cutter section of the Scratch tool. You can see quite clearly the shape that has been achieved by grinding the hacksaw blade.
