The Tools of the Trade

This is page 2 of the marquetarian's tools of the trade.

We have to thank our President Alf Murtell for his help with supplying the tools being displayed on these pages.

FRET, PIERCING & VENEER SAW FRAMES

The Fret and Piercing frames are used with piercing saw blades. The veneer saw is explained further in another section of this page.

VENEER SAW

A saw with teeth on both edges, can be used left or right handed for cutting off the surplus veneer on the edges of pictures, etc.

CLOSE UP VIEW OF VENEER SAW TEETH

A closer view of the saw teeth showing the curved nature of the cutting edge of the saw blade.

VENEER HAMMER

Not used as a "hammer", but drawn down the veneer in a zig zag manner, used with hot glue, not suitable for laying marquetry pictures or with contact adhesive.

PLASTIC HANDLE & BLADE

A safety quality plastic handle and blade used in place of the familiar scalpel. Many marquetarians prefer this tool for the comfort it provides.

OIL STONE & CASE

For keeping the tip of the cutting blade sharp.

SANDING BLOCK & CORK

For flattening and levelling picture surfaces. Used with abrasive paper wrapped around.

SEAM ROLLER

Normally used when decorating, but very useful when laying pictures.

MAUN SAFETY RULER (TOP)

So designed that when used with the cutting knife the fingers fit into the recess in the ruler, and the risk of cut fingers is greatly reduced.

STRAIGHT EDGE (BOTTOM) & TWEEZERS (MIDDLE)

Straight edges can be obtained in various lengths and are ideal when cutting longer lengths of veneers for panels, etc.  The tweezers are a very useful tool for handling small pieces of veneer.
