Marquetry and Me
                                                                            By Vicky Zammit

I am still getting up to mischief with my marquetry and feel I have progressed well since making my picture "Up to mischief" and winning the competition this having given me more confidence in my marquetry work and encouraged me to work on more pictures. I find it a challenge choosing new pictures, as I am sure we all do. I am always looking for new ideas for my next marquetry picture. I have a few projects on the go at the moment and I’m always thinking of new ideas. I am working on a scene of Dunster Yarn Market in Somerset that I spotted last year while I was on holiday there. I thought it would be an ideal marquetry picture with lovely scenery and lots of detail to concentrate on. I have found this quite challenging with overcoming lots of problems and learning new skills as I progress with my picture. I can see my progression because when I look at my early pictures I can see problems I am now able to overcome and different techniques I have developed through making my marquetry pictures. I am also working on a harbour scene that I am making for my aunt because she was fascinated by the detail and work that goes into the pictures and how the grain of the veneer gives the picture different colourings and effects. I enjoy seeing other people’s pictures progress and the different techniques they use. Again I have found the members of the Redbridge marquetry group very friendly and helpful giving me support, advice and giving demonstrations on different techniques they use. Everyone is always willing to help each other sharing ideas so everyone gains the most enjoyment from their marquetry pictures. I am still enjoying making marquetry pictures and will continue to do so.

Below is a photo of Vicky after receiving her award for her marquetry picture "Up to Mischief" plus, also, photos of two of her earlier works.
